High Fructose Corn Syrup – HFCS

Dr. Oz has HFCS listed this as his number 2 of foods to avoid on his Oprah.com food hall of shame…

What’s wrong with it after all?

Consumption of HFCS prevents your brain from making a chemical that enables your brain to signal to your body that you are full, causing you to consumer on average an extra 100 calories.

It is widely used because of it’s highly concentrated sweetness making it less expensive in food manufacturing.

I have virtually eliminated HFCS from the diet of our family. If it’s on the ingredient list I look for an alternative… it is really surprising just how many food products are made using HFCS.

Look for it in Sodas, Breads, Ketchup, Relish, Baked Beans. Syrups, Salad Dressings and my favorite it’s even in Mott’s applesauce… and so on.

If you check the labels – in most cases you will find that one of the brands does not contain HFCS.

Hey Diva!  Keep in mind that it isn’t so much the HFCS itself that is the problem.  The problem is that there is sweetener in everything we eat.  Using any kind of sweetener in very limited amounts is the solution, not just avoiding HFCS.

All sweeteners should be used in moderation. No doubt, but there is some extra stuff in HFCS that makes it particularly troublesome… like the fact that you’re likely to consume an extra 150 calories in a meal if it contains HFCS.

HFCS is worse than cane sugar.  This is a fact.  This is something that you may observe in your own household without the help of the professionals.  Try drinking a 12 oz bottle of cane sugar soda…..  it’s not easy because by the time you reach the 10th ounce you begin to get full.  Try drinking a 24 oz HFCS soda……. no problem, because it does not trigger your brain to make you feel full allowing you to consume it easy.  This is one reason why I stay away from HFCS.
